The DC Diaries #2

16:58 DC Time, Flag Count: 0

Jim moved out this morning. Bernhard and I are alone in a very large house on two floors at the corner of East Capitol and 3rd. We all had a rather sleepless night between the heat and various ailments, and we're having a completely lazy Sunday enjoying the house and trying to work out the rules and regulations of the Library of Congress. Hotel and Greyhound bus have been booked and I'm headed for New York on my birthday in just under two weeks' time. Unfortunately the plan to see the Mets there failed miserably, as they will, of course, be in DC playing the Nationals that weekend. On the other hand, Bruce and another scholar I haven't met suggested that we could get cheap tickets for the Nationals vs the Pittsburgh Pirates later on this season, which is good enough, gotta support the local team!

Update 20:44, Flag Count: 25+10 Canadian flags.
Walked down to the Capitol and as far as the National Gallery of Art on The Mall. The land stretches out to meet the Potomac river and the spectactle is, again, awesome. We encountered a small, non-identifiably African religious congregation with a preacher who was talking about the one year anniversary of a local martyr's death. I immediately thought of Martin Luther King in 1963 giving his "I have a dream" speech, and I tried to imagine the crowds all heaped in here for that momentous occasion. I wonder if they realised they were making history. I wonder if they recognised Bob Dylan appearing next to MLK. It's impossible to walk for more than an hour, so we returned home exahusted, wading through the thick humid air.
